Intended Use

The AREX SCRU2 headless compression screw is intended for fixation of intra-articular and extra-articular fractures of the upper and lower extremities, as well as nonunions of small bones and bone fragments, arthrodesis of small joints, bunionectomies and osteotomies. Examples include scaphoid and other carpal bones, metacarpais, tarsals, metatarsals, patella, ulnar styloid, capitellum, radial head and radial styloid.

Device Story

AREX SCRU 2 is a cannulated, self-drilling, self-tapping, dual-pitch threaded headless compression screw; designed for fixation of small bone fractures, nonunions, and arthrodesis. Device is implanted by surgeons in clinical settings to provide mechanical compression across bone fragments. Titanium alloy construction allows for countersinking into bone. Benefits include stabilization of small bone fractures and joints to facilitate healing.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data; bench testing only.

Technological Characteristics

Cannulated, self-drilling, self-tapping, dual-pitch threaded headless compression screw. Material: Titanium alloy. Dimensions: 2.5mm or 3mm OD; 10mm to 45mm lengths. Non-sterile.

Indications for Use

Indicated for fixation of intra-articular and extra-articular fractures of upper and lower extremities, nonunions of small bones/fragments, arthrodesis of small joints, bunionectomies, and osteotomies in patients requiring bone fixation.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
