INSPIRE 6F M is intended for use in adult surgical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. It provides gas exchange support and blood temperature control. INSPIRE 6F M integrated arterial filter provides additional protection against air and solid emboli. INSPIRE 6F M is intended to be used for 6 hours or less. INSPIRE 6M is intended for use in adult and small adult surgical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. It provides gas exchange support and blood temperature control. INSPIRE 6M is intended to be used for 6 hours or less. INSPIRE 8F M is intended for use in adult surgical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. It provides gas exchange support and blood temperature control. INSPIRE 8F M integrated arterial filter provides additional protection against air and solid emboli. INSPIRE 8F M is intended to be used for 6 hours or less. The INSPIRE 8M is intended for use in adult and small adult surgical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. It provides gas exchange support and blood temperature control. INSPIRE 8M is intended to be used for 6 hours or less.

Device Story

Hollow fiber membrane oxygenator with integrated heat exchanger; F-models include integrated arterial filter. Inputs: venous or suction blood. Operation: gas exchange (oxygenation/CO2 removal) and temperature control (hypothermia/normothermia maintenance). Output: oxygenated, temperature-regulated blood returned to patient. Used in OR during cardiopulmonary bypass; operated by perfusionists/surgeons. Modification: gas outlet port size increased from 1/4" to 3/8" to improve moisture handling/reduce obstruction risk. Benefits: provides life-sustaining gas exchange and emboli protection during cardiac surgery.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. In vitro performance testing compared modified gas outlet port devices against predicates using sterile aged samples (accelerated aging equivalent to 3 years). Results confirmed the modified oxygenating module successfully met all acceptance criteria for moisture handling.

Technological Characteristics

Hollow fiber membrane oxygenator; integrated heat exchanger; integrated arterial filter (F-models). Flow rates: up to 6 L/min (6M/6F M) or 8 L/min (8M/8F M). Gas outlet port size: 3/8". Materials: unchanged from predicate. Sterilization: not specified.

Indications for Use

Indicated for adult and small adult patients undergoing surgical procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass for up to 6 hours. Provides gas exchange, blood temperature control, and (for F-models) arterial filtration for air/solid emboli protection.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenator is a device used to exchange gases between blood and a gaseous environment to satisfy the gas exchange needs of a patient during open-heart surgery.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Guidance for Cardiopulmonary Bypass Oxygenators 510(k) Submissions.”
