Intended Use

The monitor is indicated for use by healthcare professionals whenever there is a need for monitoring the physiological parameters of patients. The monitor is intended to be used for monitoring and recording of, and to generate alarms for, multiple physiological parameters of adults, pediatrics, and neonates. The monitor is intended for use by trained healthcare professionals in a hospital environment. The monitor is only for use on one patient at a time. It is not intended for home use. Not a therapeutic device. The monitor is for prescription use only.

Device Story

Philips IntelliVue patient monitors (X2, MP series, MX series) collect physiological data including ECG, blood pressure, temperature, EEG (BIS), gas analysis, and neuromuscular transmission (NMT). System architecture utilizes central processing units and measurement modules to process signals, generate alarms, and store data. Used in hospital settings and transport by trained clinicians. NMT module uses accelerometry to measure muscle contraction following peripheral nerve stimulation. Output displayed on integrated or external flat-panel monitors; assists clinicians in patient assessment and decision-making. Software revision J.08 enables communication with NMT module. Benefits include continuous patient monitoring and objective neuromuscular transmission assessment.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Verification and validation activities, including system-level testing and hazard analysis, were performed to confirm performance, functionality, and reliability against predicate specifications. No clinical data was required or provided for this modification.

Technological Characteristics

Multi-parameter patient monitoring system comprising display units, CPUs, and physiological measurement modules. Connectivity via IntelliVue Clinical Network. Software revision J.08. NMT module utilizes accelerometry for neuromuscular transmission monitoring. Complies with AAMI EC 11 for ECG measurements.

Indications for Use

Indicated for monitoring physiological parameters in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients by healthcare professionals in hospital environments. Specific modules indicated for: ST segment monitoring (adults only); Predictive Temperature (adults/pediatrics); Sepsis Protocol (adults); Pulse Pressure Variation (sedated adults on mechanical ventilation); Integrated Pulmonary Index (adults/pediatrics 1-12 years); Transcutaneous gas (neonates); BIS monitoring (adults/pediatrics); Neuromuscular transmission (adults/pediatrics).

Regulatory Classification

Identification

The arrhythmia detector and alarm device monitors an electrocardiogram and is designed to produce a visible or audible signal or alarm when atrial or ventricular arrhythmia, such as premature contraction or ventricular fibrillation, occurs.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Arrhythmia Detector and Alarm” will serve as the special control. See § 870.1 for the availability of this guidance document.

Use of BIS monitoring to help guide anesthetic administration may be associated with the reduction of the incidence of awareness with recall in adults during general anesthesia and sedation. The SSC Sepsis Protocol, in the ProtocolWatch clinical decision support tool, is intended for use with adult patients only. The derived measurement Pulse Pressure Variation (PPV) is intended for use with sedated patients receiving controlled mechanical ventilation and mainly free from cardiac arrhythmia. The PPV measurement has been validated only for adult patients. The Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI) is intended for use with adult and pediatric (1 to 12 years) patients only. The IPI is an adjunct to and not intended to replace vital sign monitoring. {14}------------------------------------------------ # K122439 The IntelliVue NMT Module is intended to be used as an objective neuromuscular transmission monitor, using accelerometry for measuring the muscle contraction following an electrical stimulation of a peripheral nerve.
