Device Story

Balanced Knee System High Flex PS is a semi-constrained modular total knee replacement prosthesis; designed to accommodate up to 150° of flexion. Components include a polished Co-Cr-Mo femoral component and a compression-molded UHMWPE tibial insert. Used in cemented arthroplasty procedures; compatible with existing Balanced Knee System (BKS) tibial trays, augments, stems, and patellae. Implanted by orthopedic surgeons in clinical settings. Device restores knee joint configuration and function; improves range of motion compared to standard implants. Mechanical performance verified via bench testing, including fatigue strength and constraint analysis.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance data includes range of motion (up to 150°), femoral fatigue strength, femorotibial constraint, femorotibial contact area, patellofemoral constraint, patellofemoral contact area, and PS spine fatigue. Results indicate performance similar to or improved over predicate devices.

Identification

A knee joint patellofemorotibial polymer/metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a knee joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and a tibial component or components and a retropatellar resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. This generic type of device is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).
