Intended Use

When used as an interbody fusion device, the ProLift® Micro Expandable System is intended for spinal fusion procedures in skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one or two contiguous levels (L2-S1). DDD is defined as back pain of discogenic origin with degeneration of the disc confirmed by history and radiographic studies. DDD patients may also have up to Grade 1 spondylolisthesis at the involved level(s). It is to be used in patients who have had at least six months of non-operative treatment. Patients with previous non-fusion spinal surgery at involved level(s) may be treated with the device. This device is intended to be used with autograft bone graft and/or allogeneic bone graft composed of cancellous and/or corticocancellous bone and a supplemental internal spinal fixation system (e.g., pedicle screw or anterolateral plating system) that is cleared for use in the lumbosacral spine.

Device Story

ProLift® Micro Expandable Spacer System is an intervertebral body fusion device; used in spinal fusion procedures. Device is implanted by surgeons in clinical settings. Implant is expandable (8mm to 16mm height) to accommodate patient anatomy; features teeth on superior/inferior surfaces to prevent migration/rotation. Device is packed with autograft or allogeneic bone graft to promote fusion. Used in conjunction with supplemental internal spinal fixation (e.g., pedicle screws). Benefits include restoration of disc height and stabilization of spinal segments in patients with degenerative disc disease.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Mechanical performance demonstrated via static axial compression, dynamic axial compression, static shear, and dynamic shear testing in accordance with ASTM F2077.

Technological Characteristics

Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) per ASTM F136. Expandable interbody spacer; height range 8mm-16mm. Features surface teeth for vertebral interface. Sterile, single-use. Mechanical testing per ASTM F2077.

Indications for Use

Indicated for skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) at one or two contiguous levels (L2-S1), including those with up to Grade 1 spondylolisthesis, who have failed at least six months of non-operative treatment. Includes patients with previous non-fusion spinal surgery at the involved level(s).

The device is inserted into the intervertebral body space of the cervical or lumbosacral spine, and is intended for intervertebral body fusion.

Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls) for intervertebral body fusion devices that contain bone grafting material. The special control is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Intervertebral Body Fusion Device.” See § 888.1(e) for the availability of this guidance document.(2) Class III (premarket approval) for intervertebral body fusion devices that include any therapeutic biologic (e.g., bone morphogenic protein). Intervertebral body fusion devices that contain any therapeutic biologic require premarket approval.
