Intended Use

The True Indicating Self-Contained Biological Indicator is intended for monitoring the efficacy of saturated steam sterilization processes. The True Indicating Self-Contained Biological Indicator has a validated reduced incubation time of 10 hours and may be used in the following steam sterilization cycles: 121°C, 30 minutes (Gravity) 132°C, 4 minutes (Pre-Vacuum) 135°C, 3 minutes (Pre-Vacuum)

Device Story

Self-contained biological indicator (SCBI) for monitoring steam sterilization efficacy. Device consists of polypropylene vial containing a 6-mm filter paper disc inoculated with Geobacillus stearothermophilus (ATCC 7953) spores and a glass ampule of nutrient broth with Bromocresol Purple pH indicator. User places SCBI in the most difficult area to sterilize; after cycle completion, user activates device by crushing the ampule to submerge the disc in media. Device is incubated at 55-65°C for 10 hours. Growth is indicated by a color shift from purple to yellow and/or turbidity, signifying sterilization failure. Absence of growth (media remains purple) indicates effective sterilization. Used in clinical or healthcare settings to verify sterilization cycle performance.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing performed per ISO 11138-1:2017 and ISO 11138-3:2017 standards. Results: Viable spore population 1.0-4.8 x 10^5; D121 ≥ 1.7 min, D132 ≥ 18 s, D135 ≥ 12 s; z-value ≥ 11.6. Reduced incubation time of 10 hours demonstrated >97% alignment with 7-day conventional incubation. Simulated use testing confirmed growth in abbreviated cycles and no growth in half/full cycles.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: Polypropylene vial/cap, glass ampule, paper filter carrier. Sensing: Biological indicator (Geobacillus stearothermophilus). Energy: Thermal (incubation 55-65°C). Dimensions: Not specified. Connectivity: None. Sterilization: Not applicable (device is a monitor). Software: None.

Indications for Use

Indicated for monitoring the efficacy of saturated steam sterilization processes in gravity and pre-vacuum cycles.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Biological sterilization process indicator: A device intended for use by a health care provider to accompany products being sterilized through a sterilization procedure and to monitor adequacy of sterilization. The device consists of a known number of microorganisms, of known resistance to the mode of sterilization, in or on a carrier and enclosed in a protective package. Subsequent growth or failure of the microorganisms to grow under suitable conditions indicates the adequacy of sterilization. Physical/chemical sterilization process indicator: A device intended for use by a health care provider to accompany products being sterilized through a sterilization procedure and to monitor one or more parameters of the sterilization process. The adequacy of the sterilization conditions as measured by these parameters is indicated by a visible change in the device.
