Intended Use

The Biomet Hip Fracture Plating Systems are indicated for use in the open reduction and internal fixation of a wide variety of fractures of the proximal femur: intracapsular fractures and intertrochanteric fractures. Fracture plates with six or more femoral shaft fixation screw holes are also indicated for subtrochanteric fractures as well as proximal femoral osteotomies.

Device Story

System consists of side-specific fracture plates, 7.5mm telescoping lag screws, and 4.5mm cortical screws (locking/non-locking). Used for open reduction and internal fixation of proximal femur fractures. Lag screws insert into femoral head and lock into plate; cortical screws secure plate to lateral femur. Optional collapse sleeves limit telescoping lag screw distraction. Intended for surgical use by orthopedic surgeons. Provides mechanical stabilization of bone fractures to facilitate healing.

No clinical data. Substantial equivalence demonstrated via bench testing including static and cyclic fatigue, torsional properties, insertion/removal torques, and pullout strength.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy with TiMax Type II anodized finish. Components: Fracture plates, 7.5mm telescoping lag screws (70-130mm), 4.5mm cortical screws (14-95mm), and collapse sleeves (5-20mm). Mechanical fixation system.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring open reduction and internal fixation of proximal femur fractures, including intracapsular, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric fractures, as well as proximal femoral osteotomies.

The devices contain a plate, a nail/plate combination, or a blade/plate combination that are made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium, that are intended to be held in position with fasteners, such as screws and nails, or bolts, nuts, and washers. These devices are used for fixation of fractures of the proximal or distal end of long bones, such as intracapsular, intertrochanteric, intercervical, supracondylar, or condylar fractures of the femur; for fusion of a joint; or for surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone. The devices may be implanted or attached through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
