Intended Use

Merries UNI-OSTEO pellets are used to fill bony defects which may be surgically created voids or from traumatic injury to the bone. The product is indicated to be packed into bony defects of the skeletal system which is not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure.

Device Story

Merries UNI-OSTEO Pellets are a resorbable bone void filler composed of calcium sulfate (CaSO4). The device acts as an osteoconductive scaffold to facilitate new bone growth in non-structural bony defects. It is intended for surgical use by clinicians to fill voids resulting from trauma or surgical procedures. The pellets are radiopaque, allowing for identification and monitoring of implant location via radiographs. The material dissolves in the body over 30-60 days, with the resorption rate corresponding to new bone formation. The device provides a mechanical filler to support bone healing without providing structural stability to the skeletal system.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Biocompatibility testing (cytotoxicity, intracutaneous reactivity, maximization sensitization, genotoxicity, and implantation) confirmed the device is non-cytotoxic, non-sensitizing, and non-mutagenic. Mechanical testing demonstrated strength equivalent to predicate devices. Sterility was validated via dose auditing.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Calcium sulfate (CaSO4) conforming to USP/NF monograph. Form factor: Pellets. Principle: Osteoconductive scaffold. Resorption: 30-60 days. Radiopaque. Sterilization: Validated dose auditing.

Indications for Use

Indicated for filling bony defects (surgically created or traumatic) in the skeletal system that are not intrinsic to structural stability.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A resorbable calcium salt bone void filler device is a resorbable implant intended to fill bony voids or gaps of the extremities, spine, and pelvis that are caused by trauma or surgery and are not intrinsic to the stability of the bony structure.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance: Resorbable Calcium Salt Bone Void Filler Device; Guidance for Industry and FDA.” See § 888.1(e) of this chapter for the availability of this guidance.
