Intended Use

As provided in 21b CFR 870.1340, a catheter introducer is a sheath used to facilitate placing a catheter through the skin into a vein or artery.

Device Story

BD Introsyte and BD Splittable Needle Introducers are splittable, polyethylene catheter introducers used to facilitate catheter placement into veins or arteries. Devices are available in 16 to 24 gauge sizes. Autoguard variants incorporate spring-activated needle-shielding technology to reduce needle-stick risks. The device is operated by healthcare professionals in clinical settings. The modification described involves updated lubrication systems to enable an 'ozone-friendly' manufacturing process. The device functions as a mechanical sheath; it does not involve electronic processing, software, or automated decision-making.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Side-by-side testing of modified and unmodified devices was conducted to compare penetration and catheter drag. Results demonstrated that product performance and biocompatibility are substantially equivalent.

Technological Characteristics

Splittable, polyethylene catheter introducers. Sizes range from 16 to 24 gauge. Autoguard models feature spring-activated needle-shielding. Modification involves 'ozone-friendly' lubrication system. No electronic components, software, or energy sources.

Indications for Use

Indicated for use as a sheath to facilitate the placement of a catheter through the skin into a vein or artery.
