Intended Use

The da Vinci Wireless Connectivity Option is intended to provide a suitable alternative for the wired Ethernet connection between the da Vinci Surgical System and the hospital's Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure. The Intuitive Surgical Endoscopic Instrument Control System (IS2000 da Vinci S Surgical System with da Vinci Connect™, da Vinci OnSite) is intended to assist in the accurate control of Intuitive Surgical Endoscopic Instruments including rigid endoscopes, blunt and sharp endoscopic dissectors, scalpels, ultrasonic shears, forceps/pick-ups, needle holders, endoscopic retractors, stabilizers, electrocautery and accessories for endoscopic manipulation of tissue, including grasping, cutting, blunt and sharp dissection, approximation, ligation, electrocautery, suturing, and delivery and placement of microwave and cryogenic ablation probes and accessories during urologic surgical procedures, general laparoscopic surgical procedures, gynecological laparoscopic surgical procedures, transoral otolaryngology surgical procedures restricted to benign and malignant tumors classified as T1 and T2, general cardiovascular and noncardiovascular thoracoscopic surgical procedures, and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures. The system is indicated for adult and pediatric use. The system can also be employed, with adjunctive mediastinotomy to perform coronary anastomosis during cardiac revascularization. It is intended for use by trained physicians in an operating room environment in accordance with the representative specific procedures set forth in the Professional instructions for Use.

Device Story

The da Vinci Wireless Connectivity Option is a modification to the da Vinci S Surgical System (IS2000) providing IEEE 802.11 wireless connectivity as an alternative to wired Ethernet for communication with hospital IP infrastructure. The system assists trained physicians in an operating room environment by enabling accurate control of endoscopic instruments for tissue manipulation, dissection, and suturing. The wireless option facilitates data transmission within the hospital network; it does not alter the core surgical functionality of the da Vinci system. The device benefits patients by maintaining the established surgical capabilities of the da Vinci platform while offering increased flexibility in operating room connectivity.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance tests were conducted to demonstrate conformance to design controls and ensure the design output meets design input requirements. No clinical data was required or provided.

Technological Characteristics

The device utilizes IEEE 802.11 wireless connectivity for communication between the surgical system and hospital IP infrastructure. It maintains the same materials, sensing/actuation principles, and energy sources as the predicate da Vinci S Surgical System (IS2000).

Indications for Use

Indicated for adult and pediatric patients undergoing urologic, general laparoscopic, gynecological laparoscopic, transoral otolaryngology (T1/T2 benign/malignant tumors), general cardiovascular/noncardiovascular thoracoscopic, and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures. Used for tissue manipulation, dissection, suturing, and ablation. Contraindications not specified.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

An endoscope and accessories is a device used to provide access, illumination, and allow observation or manipulation of body cavities, hollow organs, and canals. The device consists of various rigid or flexible instruments that are inserted into body spaces and may include an optical system for conveying an image to the user's eye and their accessories may assist in gaining access or increase the versatility and augment the capabilities of the devices. Examples of devices that are within this generic type of device include cleaning accessories for endoscopes, photographic accessories for endoscopes, nonpowered anoscopes, binolcular attachments for endoscopes, pocket battery boxes, flexible or rigid choledochoscopes, colonoscopes, diagnostic cystoscopes, cystourethroscopes, enteroscopes, esophagogastroduodenoscopes, rigid esophagoscopes, fiberoptic illuminators for endoscopes, incandescent endoscope lamps, biliary pancreatoscopes, proctoscopes, resectoscopes, nephroscopes, sigmoidoscopes, ureteroscopes, urethroscopes, endomagnetic retrievers, cytology brushes for endoscopes, and lubricating jelly for transurethral surgical instruments. This section does not apply to endoscopes that have specialized uses in other medical specialty areas and that are covered by classification regulations in other parts of the device classification regulations.

Special Controls

*Classification* —(1)*Class II (special controls).* The device, when it is an endoscope disinfectant basin, which consists solely of a container that holds disinfectant and endoscopes and accessories; an endoscopic magnetic retriever intended for single use; sterile scissors for cystoscope intended for single use; a disposable, non-powered endoscopic grasping/cutting instrument intended for single use; a diagnostic incandescent light source; a fiberoptic photographic light source; a routine fiberoptic light source; an endoscopic sponge carrier; a xenon arc endoscope light source; an endoscope transformer; an LED light source; or a gastroenterology-urology endoscopic guidewire, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 876.9.(2) Class I for the photographic accessories for endoscope, miscellaneous bulb adapter for endoscope, binocular attachment for endoscope, eyepiece attachment for prescription lens, teaching attachment, inflation bulb, measuring device for panendoscope, photographic equipment for physiologic function monitor, special lens instrument for endoscope, smoke removal tube, rechargeable battery box, pocket battery box, bite block for endoscope, and cleaning brush for endoscope. The devices subject to this paragraph (b)(2) are exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807of this chapter, subject to the limitations in § 876.9.
