Intended Use

The Sonicision™ 7 curved jaw cordless ultrasonic dissection device is indicated for soft tissue incisions when bleeding control and minimal thermal injury are desired. The device can be used as an adjunct to or substitute for electrosurgery, lasers, and steel scalpels in general, plastic, gynecologic, and other open and endoscopic procedures. The device can be used to coagulate isolated vessels up to and including 7 mm in diameter, using the minimum mode. The device can be used to coagulate isolated vessels up to and including 5 mm in diameter, using the maximum mode. The Sonicision™ 7 13 cm device is also indicated for use in otorhinolaryngologic (ENT) procedures. The Sonicision™ reusable battery pack is a non-sterile, rechargeable, lithium-ion battery that provides power to compatible surgical devices. For full device indications for use, reference the indications for use statements of the compatible devices.

Device Story

Hand-held, battery-powered ultrasonic dissection device; used in OR for open/endoscopic procedures. Surgeon assembles sterile single-use dissector, reusable generator, and reusable battery. Principle: ultrasonic energy (approx. 56 kHz) delivered via waveguide/blade; mechanical vibration disrupts tissue; thermal effect coagulates vessels. Surgeon controls energy via handpiece button and applies pressure via clamping jaw. Minimum mode coagulates vessels up to 7 mm; maximum mode coagulates up to 5 mm. Output: tissue incision and hemostasis. Benefits: cordless mobility, reduced thermal injury, effective vessel sealing. Healthcare provider uses visual/tactile feedback to guide dissection and coagulation.

Clinical Evidence

No human clinical trials. Evidence includes bench testing (biocompatibility, electrical safety per IEC 60601-1, EMC per IEC 60601-1-2), ex-vivo burst testing, ex-vivo tissue thermal analysis, and acute/chronic in-vivo animal studies. Chronic in-vivo testing confirmed hemostasis maintenance for 21 days in vessels up to 7 mm. Human factors validation confirmed usability.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: stainless steel, titanium, PTFE, PC, silicone rubber. Energy: ultrasonic (56 kHz resonant frequency). Power: 7.2V Li-ion battery. Form factor: shaft-based, cordless. Connectivity: none. Sterilization: user-performed for generator/battery. Software: IEC 62304 compliant.

Indications for Use

Indicated for soft tissue incisions in general, plastic, gynecologic, and ENT procedures requiring bleeding control and minimal thermal injury. Suitable for patients undergoing open or endoscopic surgery. Contraindicated for incising bone or contraceptive tubal occlusion.
