Ultra/Phonic® Scanning Gel is an aqueous, non-sterile ultrasound conducting medium; applied to patient skin or transducer surface prior to ultrasound examination. Gel eliminates air at contact interface; provides lubrication; creates acoustic pathway for sound wave transmission and echo reception. Scanner processes received echoes to generate diagnostic/therapeutic images for healthcare professional review. Used in hospital settings; applied by clinicians. Formulation is salt-free, water-soluble, sheer-thinning; resists decomposition from body heat/perspiration; maintains acoustic coupling performance.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data. Bench testing only. Acoustic properties (sound velocity, density, impedance, attenuation) compared to predicate; results virtually identical. Antimicrobial effectiveness testing (USP <51>) passed for bacteria, yeasts, and molds. Biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993-10) confirmed non-sensitizing and non-irritating. In vitro cytotoxicity testing (ISO 10993-5:2009) confirmed non-cytotoxic.

# IV. DEVICE DESCRIPTION
Ultra/Phonic® Scanning Gel is an aqueous, non-sterile ultrasound conducting medium for use during non-invasive ultrasonic medical procedures. It is placed between the ultrasound transducer and the patient, eliminating air at the contact surface while providing lubrication. This provides an acoustic pathway between the transducer and the skin. This uninterrupted pathway allows the transducer to send sound waves which enter the body, and to receive echoes from tissues and structures without unexpected interference. When the echoes are received by the scanner, it analyzes them to determine how strong they are, and how long they took to be received after transmission. That information is then processed and outputted to a display as an image which is used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes by health care professionals.
It is packaged in 4L Cubitainers, 5L Cubitainers, and 250 mL bottles.

The acoustic properties of the predicate gel and Ultra/Phonic® Scanning Gel are virtually identical. Although the analysis was conducted at different temperatures, both are well within the range of temperatures encountered during clinical use (72.5°F - 80°F). Such variations in temperature do not induce more than small changes in the listed acoustic properties, too small to alter performance, or cast doubt upon the conclusions of this comparison.

# Antimicrobial Effectiveness Testing:
The USP <51> (Category 2) Antimicrobial Effectiveness Test passed with log reductions greater than 5 for all 14 and 28 day bacterial (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027) counts. Yeasts and molds (Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404, Candida albicans ATCC 10231) did not increase from initial counts, and in fact considerably decreased.
# Animal tests:
Biocompatibility (ISO 10993-10) testing was conducted for Skin Irritation and Skin Sensitization. Conclusions from these studies: Ultra/Phonic® Scanning Gel was found to be non-sensitizing and nonirritating.
# In Vitro Cytotoxicity:
Cytotoxicity (ISO 10993-5:2009) testing was conducted.
Conclusion from this study: The test article meets the requirement of the test as per The International Organization for Standardization (ISO 10993-5 Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices – Part 5: Tests for the In Vitro Cytotoxicity, Reference Number ISO 10993-5:2009), and is not considered cytotoxic.
# VIII. CONCLUSIONS
The above-referenced comparisons of the technological and non-clinical performance characteristics indicate that the Ultra/Phonic® Scanning Gel is comparable to its predicate and reference devices and certainly substantially equivalent to them and other ultrasonic coupling gels commonly used in the United States today.

3. Judging fuzzy relevance
Fuzzy results trail off in relevance as you scroll. Use three signals to decide how far down to go: the fuzzy badge explanations, the intended use column, and whether your target output (e.g., Cobb angle) still appears in the AI Performance sub-table. Once it stops appearing, you're past the relevant zone. A top hit with a low score (~0.4) and a stretched explanation is a hint the closest predicates are far away — the project may be headed for De Novo. Note the fuzzy search is a pattern match: it doesn't handle negation ("not") well, and hardware devices can appear — filter by SaMD/AI ML to cut them.

4. Device detail page: chat and citations

5. Side-by-side comparison
Select multiple rows in the results table (aim for under ~10), then open the PDF Viewer tab. Ask one question — it goes to all selected devices in parallel, each with citations. This is the fastest way to compare and contrast devices: training data, PCCP scope, how they handled adding new scanners, and so on.

6. Collections

7. Product codes and the regulations tree
Click a product code in the results to jump to it in the regulations tree — identification text, sibling product codes, and devices you can open in a PDF viewer on the right. Click a regulation number to see its identification, special controls, and related product codes. You can also search by product code or regulation number at the top of the tree. 8. Chart view
Click Show Chart and segment by regulation number (or product code) to see which regulations dominate your result set. Clicking a regulation takes you into the regulations tree. Great for spotting that most matches are, say, hardware laparoscopic devices — a cue to go back and filter.

9. The predicate graph
Open the Predicates tab for a family-tree view of predicate relationships. Click a node to trace its parents and children; selections from search carry over pre-selected. 10. Embeddings: the galaxy map
The Embeddings tab plots every matching document in a 2-D "galaxy map" where semantically similar devices cluster together. Hover or click clusters to explore, and let AI label the clusters for you. Embeddings beat product codes for grouping: two devices can carry different product codes (LLZ vs. QIH) yet do the same thing — the embedding captures the meaning of the intended use and device story. This is also exactly how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) works under the hood, and it makes a great visual on client calls.
