Intended Use

The ONVOY Acetabular System is intended for use in reconstruction of the articulating surface of the acetabular portion of the hip that is severely disabled and/or very painful resulting from: 1. Non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease including osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, and avascular necrosis. 2. Rheumatoid arthritis. 3. Correction of functional deformity. 4. Treatment of non-union, femoral neck fracture, and trochanteric fractures of the proximal femur with head involvement, unmanageable using other techniques. 5. Revision of previously failed total hip arthroplasty. 6. Dislocation risks. The ONVOY Acetabular System is used in conjunction with Globus/StelKast Hip Systems. The acetabular components of this hip system are intended for cementless fixation.

Device Story

ONVOY Acetabular System comprises acetabular shells, liners, dual mobility bearings, and femoral heads for total hip arthroplasty. Shells are additively manufactured titanium alloy; liners/bearings are highly crosslinked UHMWPE with Vitamin E; dual mobility liners are CoCr alloy; femoral heads are alumina matrix composite ceramic. Used in conjunction with Globus/StelKast Hip Systems for cementless fixation. Implants provide articulating surface for hip joint reconstruction. Surgeons select configurations/sizes based on patient anatomy. Device restores joint function, reduces pain, and addresses dislocation risks in patients with severe hip pathology.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Mechanical testing performed per ASTM F3090, F1820, F1875, F2345, F2582, ISO 7206-12, and ISO 14242. Range of motion assessed per ISO 21535. Bacterial endotoxin testing performed per ANSI/AAMI ST72:2011.

Technological Characteristics

Acetabular shells: additively manufactured titanium alloy (ASTM F3001). Liners/bearings: highly crosslinked UHMWPE with Vitamin E. Dual mobility liners: CoCr alloy. Femoral heads: alumina matrix composite ceramic. Cementless fixation. Various configurations (cluster-hole, hooded, non-hooded, lateralized).

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients with severe hip disability or pain due to non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis, functional deformity, non-union, femoral neck/trochanteric fractures, or revision of failed total hip arthroplasty; also indicated for patients with dislocation risks.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A hip joint metal/polymer/metal semi-constrained porous-coated uncemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a hip joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across the joint. This generic type of device has a femoral component made of a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy or a titanium-aluminum-vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy and an acetabular component composed of an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene articulating bearing surface fixed in a metal shell made of Co-Cr-Mo or Ti-6Al-4V. The femoral stem and acetabular shell have a porous coating made of, in the case of Co-Cr-Mo substrates, beads of the same alloy, and in the case of Ti-6Al-4V substrates, fibers of commercially pure titanium or Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The porous coating has a volume porosity between 30 and 70 percent, an average pore size between 100 and 1,000 microns, interconnecting porosity, and a porous coating thickness between 500 and 1,500 microns. The generic type of device has a design to achieve biological fixation to bone without the use of bone cement.

New femoral head sizes are also being introduced. Implants are available in various configurations and sizes to fit a wide variety of patient anatomy. Shells are available in a cluster-hole design, liners are available in hooded, non-hooded, and lateralized designs used in conjunction with ONVOY shells. The subject ONVOY™ shells differ in manufacturing method; the polyethylene liners and dual mobility bearings differ in crosslinking radiation dose as compared to the predicate devices. These differences have been evaluated and do not raise any new concerns of safety or effectiveness for the subject ONVOY™ Acetabular System for its intended indications for use. ## Basis of Substantial Equivalence: Subject ONVOY™ Acetabular System implants have been found to be substantially equivalent to the predicate devices with respect to technological characteristics, performance, and intended use.
