The Medline UNITE® Medial Malleolus Peg Plate System, when used in conjunction with the Medline UNITE® Locking and Non-Locking Screws, are indicated for fixation of fractures, and nonunions of the distal tibia and fibula such as: - Medial Malleolar Fractures - Lateral Malleolar Fractures - Syndesmosis Injuries - Bi-Malleolar Fractures - Tri-Malleolar Fractures - Vertical Shear Fractures of the Medial Malleolus - Medial Malleolar Avulsion Fractures - Lateral Malleolar Avulsion Fractures In addition, the Medline UNITE® Locking Pegs, when used in conjunction with the Medline UNITE® Mini Plates and Screws, are indicated for use in stabilization of fresh fractures, joint fusion and reconstruction of small bones of the hand, feet, wrist, ankles, fingers and toes. The system can be used in both adult and pediatric (adolescent and child) patients.
Device Story
System consists of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) plates, locking/non-locking screws, and locking pegs; used for bone fixation, stabilization, and reconstruction in orthopedic procedures. Implants are surgically placed by physicians to stabilize fractures or facilitate joint fusion in distal tibia, fibula, and small bones of extremities. System includes reusable instrumentation (e.g., plate inserters, wire sleeves) for implantation. Device provides mechanical stability to bone segments during healing. Benefits include restoration of skeletal alignment and support for bone union.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical testing was performed. Substantial equivalence is supported by bench testing and engineering analysis comparing the subject device to the predicate Medline UNITE® Ankle Fracture Plating System.
Technological Characteristics
Materials: Titanium alloy (ASTM F136 or ISO 5832-3). Components: Plates, locking/non-locking screws (2.7mm, 3.5mm, 4.0mm), and 2.0mm diameter locking pegs. Design: Polyaxial locking up to 15 degrees; universal configuration. Sterilization: Not specified. Connectivity: None (mechanical device).
Indications for Use
Indicated for adult and pediatric patients requiring fixation of fractures, osteotomies, and nonunions of the distal tibia and fibula (including malleolar fractures, syndesmosis injuries, and avulsion fractures) or stabilization of fresh fractures, joint fusion, and reconstruction of small bones in the hand, feet, wrist, ankles, fingers, and toes.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
Single/multiple component metallic bone fixation appliances and accessories are devices intended to be implanted consisting of one or more metallic components and their metallic fasteners. The devices contain a plate, a nail/plate combination, or a blade/plate combination that are made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium, that are intended to be held in position with fasteners, such as screws and nails, or bolts, nuts, and washers. These devices are used for fixation of fractures of the proximal or distal end of long bones, such as intracapsular, intertrochanteric, intercervical, supracondylar, or condylar fractures of the femur; for fusion of a joint; or for surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone. The devices may be implanted or attached through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
