Device Story

Spinal USA VBR System is a vertebral body replacement implant designed to restore spinal biomechanical integrity after vertebrectomy. Implants are available in straight, curved, round, and trapezoidal geometries to accommodate patient anatomy. Device is implanted into the vertebral body space by a surgeon; requires concurrent use of supplemental spinal fixation (e.g., pedicle screws, rods, or plates) and bone graft. Provides structural support to the anterior, middle, and posterior spinal column in cases of tumor or trauma. Supplied non-sterile.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing conducted in accordance with ASTM F2077-03 (Test Methods for Intervertebral Body Fusion Devices) to demonstrate mechanical equivalence.

Technological Characteristics

Constructed from medical grade titanium or titanium alloy (ASTM F136 or ISO 5832-3). Available in straight, curved, round, and trapezoidal form factors. Non-sterile. Mechanical device; no software or electronic components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring vertebral body replacement in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spine (T1-L5) following partial or total vertebrectomy due to tumor or trauma (fracture). Must be used with supplemental spinal fixation and bone graft.

Identification

A spinal intervertebral body fixation orthosis is a device intended to be implanted made of titanium. It consists of various vertebral plates that are punched into each of a series of vertebral bodies. An eye-type screw is inserted in a hole in the center of each of the plates. A braided cable is threaded through each eye-type screw. The cable is tightened with a tension device and it is fastened or crimped at each eye-type screw. The device is used to apply force to a series of vertebrae to correct “sway back,” scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine), or other conditions.
