Device Story
The Synthes Synsonic Ulna Nail System is an orthopedic implant system for treating ulnar shaft fractures. It consists of intramedullary nails, end caps, and locking tacks made of PEEK-Optima polymer and stainless steel. The system utilizes an ultrasonic generator, handpiece, and footswitch to deliver ultrasonic energy to fasten locking tacks to the nail, creating a fixed-angle construct for rotational alignment, torsional stability, and axial control. The handpiece includes a force sensor that provides feedback to the surgeon; an audible tone indicates when the correct pressure range is achieved for fixation. The device is used by surgeons in a clinical setting. The fixed-angle construct benefits the patient by stabilizing the fracture site during the healing process.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Testing included static cantilever bend, cyclic torsion, tack removal, nail removal, and thermal profile testing to analyze welding-induced temperatures against clinical literature criteria. Electrical safety was verified per IEC 60601-1.
