Intended Use

The DialGuard™ device is intended to be used for the reduction of endotoxin from: 1. Dialysate prior to entering the dialyser 2. Water prior to its use for preparation of dialysate 3. Water prior to use for regenerating dialysers. DialGuard™ is intended to be used on a regular preventative basis during hemodialysis treatments.

Device Story

DialGuard™ is a water purification device designed to reduce endotoxin levels in dialysate and water used in hemodialysis. The device consists of a polysulfone housing containing an agarose-based affinity resin, fitted with Quick Connect couplings. It is installed in the fluid path prior to the artificial kidney (dialyzer). During hemodialysis, the device acts as a filter to capture endotoxins, consistently reducing levels to ≤ 0.05 EU/mL. It is intended for regular preventative use by clinical staff in a dialysis setting. By maintaining lower endotoxin levels in the dialysate, the device aims to improve the safety of the dialysis process for the patient.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data. Evidence is based on bench testing, including flow rate and pressure studies, endotoxin removal efficacy (demonstrating reduction to ≤ 0.05 EU/mL), dialysate composition maintenance (conductivity and ion composition testing), leachables testing, and biocompatibility testing.

Technological Characteristics

Polysulfone housing; agarose-based affinity resin; Quick Connect couplings. Sanitizable. Positioned prior to dialyzer. Mechanical filtration/affinity binding principle. No energy source. Standalone device.

Indications for Use

Indicated for reduction of endotoxin in dialysate and water used for dialysate preparation or dialyzer regeneration during hemodialysis treatments.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A water purification system for hemodialysis is a device that is intended for use with a hemodialysis system and that is intended to remove organic and inorganic substances and microbial contaminants from water used to dilute dialysate concentrate to form dialysate. This generic type of device may include a water softener, sediment filter, carbon filter, and water distillation system.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The device, when it is a water purification subsystem disinfectant, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 876.9.
