Intended Use

The E-Steth Electronic Stethoscope is intended for use as a diagnostic aid in patient diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. It amplifies, records, stores, plays back, and transmits sounds associated with the heart and other internal organs. Significant components include a control unit, installation software earphones, and a communication cable. The E-Steth amplifies sounds in a broad frequency range, including a range higher than the traditional diaphragm mode. The user must supply a personal computer with a Microsoft Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0 operating system, a sound card, and CD-ROM drive. The stored sounds can be transmitted via e-mail. This device is a stand-alone unit, has no software and operates using an analog system with a standard earpiece. It can be converted to electronic by the user buying and using a sound card. The E-Steth records the heartbeat as a stand-alone device. It can be connected to a computer to record information, but the software does not operate the stethoscope in any manner.

Device Story

E-Steth Electronic Stethoscope functions as diagnostic aid for heart/internal organ auscultation; amplifies, records, stores, plays back, and transmits acoustic signals. Device comprises control unit, earphones, and communication cable; operates as stand-alone analog system. Optional PC connectivity via sound card allows recording/transmission of audio files via e-mail. Used by clinicians in diagnostic settings. Device does not utilize active software for stethoscope operation; PC software serves only for data storage/management. Benefits include broader frequency range than traditional diaphragm stethoscopes and ability to share diagnostic audio data.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data submitted. Substantial equivalence demonstrated via bench testing, including environmental and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing per voluntary standards.

Technological Characteristics

Analog electronic stethoscope; control unit with earphones and communication cable. Operates via analog amplification; frequency range exceeds traditional diaphragm stethoscopes. Connectivity: optional PC interface via sound card for data recording/transmission. Power: not specified. Sterilization: not specified.

Indications for Use

Indicated for use as a diagnostic aid in patient diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring by amplifying, recording, storing, playing back, and transmitting heart and internal organ sounds.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Manual stethoscope: A mechanical device used to project the sounds associated with the heart, arteries, and veins and other internal organs. Electronic stethoscope: An electrically amplified device used to project the sounds associated with the heart, arteries, and veins and other internal organs.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The device, when it is a lung sound monitor, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 870.9.
