Intended Use
The ViewPoint is intended for use as a device which uses diagnostic images of the patient acquired specifically to assist the physician with presurgical planning and to provide orientation and reference information during intra-operative procedures.
Device Story
ViewPoint 3.0 is an image-assisted surgery system for presurgical planning and intra-operative orientation. It processes diagnostic patient images (CT/MR) to provide spatial reference. The system uses hand-held tools equipped with infrared-emitting diodes (IREDs) tracked by a position sensor assembly (two optical detectors). The software supports registration via scanned or anatomical fiducials. New features include a detector positioning guide to assist users in locating the center of the active digitizer volume (1m x 1m silo). Used in OR settings by surgeons; the system provides visual feedback via a graphical user interface (GUI) to assist in navigation during intracranial and spinal procedures. It supports accessories including drill guides, tracking devices, and a CT spine phantom. The system aids clinical decision-making by providing real-time orientation relative to pre-acquired diagnostic images.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data provided; bench testing only. Substantial equivalence is based on technical comparison of system parameters, including tool accuracy (2.0-5.0 mm) and tracking methodology.
Technological Characteristics
System utilizes infrared-based optical tracking with IRED-equipped hand-held tools. Detector assembly uses two optical sensors. Software operates in a UNIX environment with a GUI for image manipulation (MPR, surface rendering). Complies with ASTM 10th Draft 9/94 Neurological Standard for Image-Interactive Stereotactic and Localization Systems. Connectivity includes support for diagnostic image import. System is designed for intra-operative use.
Indications for Use
Indicated for intra-cranial surgical procedures involving space occupying lesions or malformations (soft tissue, vascular, osseous) and spinal surgical procedures involving spinal stabilization, neural decompression, or resection of spinal neoplasms.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A stereotaxic instrument is a device consisting of a rigid frame with a calibrated guide mechanism for precisely positioning probes or other devices within a patient's brain, spinal cord, or other part of the nervous system.
