Indications for Use

The DynaNail Helix® Fixation System is indicated for use in bone reconstruction, osteotomy, arthrodesis, joint fusion, fracture repair, and fracture fixation of bones appropriate for the size of the device such as short bones, long bones, and small or large fragments in the foot and ankle.

Device Story

DynaNail Helix Fixation System is a line extension of a bone fixation fastener system. Components include a threaded bone fastener implant and an inserter assembly. The device is used by surgeons in clinical settings for orthopedic procedures including bone reconstruction, arthrodesis, and fracture fixation. The system provides mechanical stabilization of bone fragments to facilitate healing. It is manufactured from nickel titanium alloy (NiTiNOL) and titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI). The device is implanted using ancillary surgical instruments.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing included static strain (ASTM F2516), insertion/removal torque (ASTM F543), corrosion (ASTM F2129), fatigue (ASTM E606/F2516), static/dynamic bend (ASTM F1264), fretting corrosion, axial free recovery (ASTM F2082), axial pullout (ASTM F543), and MR compatibility (ASTM F2182).

Technological Characteristics

Materials: NiTiNOL and Ti-6Al-4V ELI. Standards: ASTM F2516 (strain/fatigue), ASTM F543 (torque/pullout), ASTM F2129 (corrosion), ASTM E606 (fatigue), ASTM F1264 (bend), ASTM F2082 (recovery), ASTM F2182 (MR). Form factor: Threaded bone fastener with inserter assembly. Energy source: None (mechanical).

Indications for Use

Indicated for bone reconstruction, osteotomy, arthrodesis, joint fusion, fracture repair, and fracture fixation of short/long bones and small/large fragments in the foot and ankle.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
