Intended Use

The Prestige Coil System is intended for use in the peripheral vasculature to endovascularly obstruct or occlude blood flow in vascular abnormalities of the peripheral vessels.

Device Story

Prestige Coil System consists of platinum/tungsten embolization coils attached to delivery pusher; used for peripheral vascular embolization. Physician inserts device into vasculature via microcatheter under angiographic visualization. Coils placed in anomalies to induce blood stasis and thrombosis; thermally detached from pusher in serial manner until target vessel occluded. System available in various shapes, lengths, and sizes. Output is physical occlusion of target vessel; aids in managing vascular abnormalities. Used in clinical settings by physicians.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing included visual/dimensional inspection, simulated use in clinically relevant models, stretch-resistance thread tensile testing, and usability validation. All tests met established acceptance criteria. Biocompatibility, shelf life, packaging, sterilization, corrosion, and tensile strength data were leveraged from the predicate device.

Technological Characteristics

Implant: Platinum/tungsten coil. Delivery system: Stainless steel hypotube with PET jacket, gold-plated connector, and polyimide-coated silver lead wires. Adhesive: Dymax 1128A-M-VT; Epoxy 353 ND. Detachment: Thermal via external controller. Sterilization: Gamma irradiation. Biocompatibility per ISO 10993-1.

Indications for Use

Indicated for arterial and venous embolizations in the peripheral vasculature.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A vascular embolization device is an intravascular implant intended to control hemorrhaging due to aneurysms, certain types of tumors (e.g., nephroma, hepatoma, uterine fibroids), and arteriovenous malformations. This does not include cyanoacrylates and other embolic agents, which act by polymerization or precipitation. Embolization devices used in neurovascular applications are also not included in this classification, see § 882.5950 of this chapter.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls.) The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Vascular and Neurovascular Embolization Devices.” For availability of this guidance document, see § 870.1(e).
