Intended Use

When used with a nebulizer: The nebulizer adapter is a medical device accessory for single-patient use to facilitate aerosolization of Albuterol sulfate for inhalation to adult patients receiving high-flow humidified breathing gases via tracheostomy patient interface. Intended for use by healthcare professionals in hospitals or long-term care facilities. When used without a nebulizer: For use in hospitals and long-term care facilities, for the delivery of humidified respiratory gases to patients via nasal, tracheostomy and mask interfaces.

Device Story

Airvo Nebulizer Adapter is a single-use accessory for Airvo series humidifiers; facilitates aerosolization of physician-prescribed Albuterol sulfate into high-flow humidified breathing gas circuits. Device features a port for nebulizer attachment; used by healthcare professionals in hospitals or long-term care facilities. When nebulizer is attached, adapter connects to tracheostomy interfaces; when port is capped, it supports delivery of humidified gases via nasal, tracheostomy, or mask interfaces. Device ensures compatibility with AirSpiral tubes and MR290 humidification chambers. Clinical benefit includes efficient delivery of nebulized medication within high-flow therapy systems, maintaining humidification standards.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance testing confirmed nebulization equivalence to Aerogen T-piece (respirable dose and MMAD metrics at 10, 20, 30 L/min). Safety testing verified compliance with ISO 80601-2-74, ISO 10993-1 (biocompatibility), and ISO 18562-1 (gas pathway biocompatibility). Additional testing included shelf-life (ASTM F1980-07), transportation (ISTA 2A), condensate volume, and port cap integrity.

Technological Characteristics

Single-use plastic accessory; proprietary connectors for Airvo system integration. Nebulizer port oriented at 15° above horizontal. Non-sterile. Complies with ISO 80601-2-74, ISO 10993-1, and ISO 18562-1. Mechanical design facilitates integration into high-flow humidified breathing circuits.

Indications for Use

Indicated for adult patients receiving high-flow humidified breathing gases via tracheostomy interface for aerosolization of Albuterol sulfate, or for delivery of humidified respiratory gases via nasal, tracheostomy, or mask interfaces in hospital/long-term care settings.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A nebulizer is a device intended to spray liquids in aerosol form into gases that are delivered directly to the patient for breathing. Heated, ultrasonic, gas, venturi, and refillable nebulizers are included in this generic type of device.

The comparison of features, performance, and intended use demonstrate that the Airvo nebulizer adapter is substantially equivalent to the predicate Aerogen T-piece (K133360). In addition, performance testing of the nebulizer adapter was completed to determine that the differences between the subject device and the predicate device do not raise new questions of safety or effectiveness. These tests demonstrate substantial equivalence of the nebulizer adapter to the predicate device.
