Intended Use

The VERIFY™ ASSERT™ STEAM Process Challenge Device for Gravity Cycles is used for qualification, routine microbial monitoring, and cycle monitoring of steam sterilizers. The validated steam sterilization cycles include: - 250°F (121°C) 30-minute gravity - 270°F (132°C) 15-minute gravity The VERIFY Assert Self-Contained Indicator within the Process challenge device must be used with the VERIFY Incubator for Assert Self Contained Biological Indicators. When used in conjunction with the VERIFY Incubator for Assert Self Contained Biological Indicators, the VERIFY Assert Self-Contained Indicator within the Process challenge device provides a fluorescent result within 40 minutes.

Device Story

Device is a Process Challenge Device (PCD) for steam sterilization monitoring; contains a self-contained biological indicator (SCBI) and a chemical integrator sealed in a plastic tray with a foil cover. Tray features a molded channel creating a tortuous path to simulate air removal and steam penetration challenges equivalent to an ANSI/AAMI ST79 16-towel test pack. Used in clinical settings to monitor gravity steam sterilizers. The SCBI utilizes Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores; an enzyme produced by the organism reacts with a fluorogenic substrate in nutrient media to produce fluorescence. The device is placed in the sterilizer; after the cycle, the SCBI is removed and placed in a compatible incubator/reader. The reader detects fluorescence within 40 minutes, indicating sterilization efficacy. Provides healthcare providers with rapid confirmation of sterilization cycle success, ensuring patient safety by verifying that instruments are properly processed.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Simulated use testing compared the PCD performance against the AAMI reference pack and the predicate device. Results confirmed the PCD provides an equivalent or greater challenge to the sterilization process than the AAMI standardized test pack. Biological and chemical indicators within the pack were validated to perform as intended, with the chemical integrator not reaching its endpoint before the biological indicator is inactivated.

Technological Characteristics

Plastic tray with molded channel for steam/air resistance; contains SCBI and chemical integrator. SCBI uses Geobacillus stearothermophilus (>90% similarity to ATCC 7953) with 1.0-4.0 x 10^6 spores/SCBI. Mechanism: enzymatic reaction with fluorogenic substrate. Connectivity: requires external incubator/reader (K163587). Complies with ISO 11138-3 and ISO 11138-1.

Indications for Use

Indicated for qualification, routine microbial monitoring, and cycle monitoring of steam sterilizers in 250°F (121°C) 30-minute gravity and 270°F (132°C) 15-minute gravity cycles.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Biological sterilization process indicator: A device intended for use by a health care provider to accompany products being sterilized through a sterilization procedure and to monitor adequacy of sterilization. The device consists of a known number of microorganisms, of known resistance to the mode of sterilization, in or on a carrier and enclosed in a protective package. Subsequent growth or failure of the microorganisms to grow under suitable conditions indicates the adequacy of sterilization. Physical/chemical sterilization process indicator: A device intended for use by a health care provider to accompany products being sterilized through a sterilization procedure and to monitor one or more parameters of the sterilization process. The adequacy of the sterilization conditions as measured by these parameters is indicated by a visible change in the device.
