Intended Use

Hemi-Arthroplasty implant for the metatarsophalangeal joint for use in the treatment of patients with degenerative and post-traumatic arthritis in the metatarsal joint in the presence of good bone stock along with the following clinical conditions: hallux valgus or hallux rigidus, and an unstable or painful metatarsal/phalangeal (MTP) joint. The device is a single use implant intended to be used with bone cement.

Device Story

HemiCAP® MTP Resurfacing Hemi-Arthroplasty System is a phalangeal hemi-arthroplasty implant; consists of articular resurfacing component and cancellous taper post fixation component; components mate via taper interlock for stable, immobile fixation; intended for use with bone cement; used in orthopedic surgery for MTP joint resurfacing; provides stress-bearing contact at bone/prosthetic interface; benefits patients by addressing arthritis and joint instability; modification adds concave phalangeal base implants to existing system; not for use with metallic metatarsal implants.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical data provided. Evidence includes comparative engineering analyses and mechanical testing: assembly/disassembly, torsion resistance, cyclic fatigue, fretting corrosion, pull-out strength, and finite element analysis.

Technological Characteristics

Phalangeal hemi-arthroplasty implant; articular resurfacing component and cancellous taper post; taper interlock fixation; single-use; requires bone cement; materials and sterilization processes identical to previously cleared predicates.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients with degenerative or post-traumatic arthritis of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, or unstable/painful MTP joint, provided good bone stock is present.

Regulatory Classification

Identification
