Intended Use
The Miethke proSA Adjustable Shunt System is intended to shunt cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the lateral ventricles of the brain into the peritoneum. Adjustments of the proSA shunt can be verified by using the verification instrument but must be confirmed by radiograph (x-ray).
Device Story
Adjustable gravitational valve for hydrocephalus treatment; manages CSF flow from lateral ventricles to peritoneum. Valve housing contains tantalum weight and leaf valve controlled by internal magnets. Physician uses external manual instruments to set/verify pressure (0-40 cmH2O); settings require radiographic (X-ray) confirmation. Device used in clinical settings; provides adjustable pressure regulation to manage intracranial pressure. Benefits patient by allowing non-invasive pressure adjustment to optimize CSF drainage.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Testing conducted per ISO 7197:2006 included leak, pressure-flow, overpressure, dynamic break strength, bursting pressure, reflux performance, and long-term stability. MRI compatibility testing performed per ASTM standards confirmed MR Conditional status at 3-Tesla.
Technological Characteristics
Adjustable gravitational valve; titanium alloy (Ti4Al6V), tantalum, neodymium ferrite boron, and alpha sapphire construction. Operates via magnetic control of internal valve mechanism. Pressure range 0-40 cmH2O. MR Conditional (3-Tesla).
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients requiring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting from lateral ventricles to the peritoneum.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A central nervous system fluid shunt is a device or combination of devices used to divert fluid from the brain or other part of the central nervous system to an internal delivery site or an external receptacle for the purpose of relieving elevated intracranial pressure or fluid volume (e.g., due to hydrocephalus). Components of a central nervous system shunt include catheters, valved catheters, valves, connectors, and other accessory components intended to facilitate use of the shunt or evaluation of a patient with a shunt.
