Intended Use
The Miethke Shunt System is intended to shunt cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the lateral ventricles of the brain into the peritoneum.
Device Story
The Miethke Shunt System miniNAV Valve is a hydrocephalus shunt component designed to regulate CSF flow. The device consists of a chamber with inlet and outlet connections, featuring a ball-in-cone valve mechanism. A sapphire ball ensures precise closure, while a spiral spring maintains the opening pressure. The valve housing is manufactured from titanium. The system also includes the McLanahan reservoir, a flushing reservoir made of silicone elastomer and titanium with an integrated occlusion mechanism for proximal and distal flushing. The device is used by neurosurgeons in a clinical setting to treat hydrocephalus by diverting excess CSF. The system is MR Conditional in 3-Tesla environments.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Testing performed in accordance with ISO 7197:2000 and MRI standards including ASTM F2119 (image artifacts), ASTM F2115 (induced heating), and standards for magnetically induced torque and displacement force. Results confirm the device is MR Conditional in 3-Tesla environments.
Technological Characteristics
Materials: Titanium (valve housing), silicone elastomer and titanium (McLanahan reservoir). Principle: Ball-in-cone valve with spiral spring for pressure regulation. Form factor: Shunt valve with integrated flushing reservoir. Connectivity: None. Sterilization: Not specified. MR Compatibility: MR Conditional (3-Tesla) per ASTM F2503.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients requiring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting from the lateral ventricles of the brain into the peritoneum.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A central nervous system fluid shunt is a device or combination of devices used to divert fluid from the brain or other part of the central nervous system to an internal delivery site or an external receptacle for the purpose of relieving elevated intracranial pressure or fluid volume (e.g., due to hydrocephalus). Components of a central nervous system shunt include catheters, valved catheters, valves, connectors, and other accessory components intended to facilitate use of the shunt or evaluation of a patient with a shunt.
