Intended Use

The Bencox Bipolar Cup system is intended for cementless use in partial or total hip arthroplasty in primary or revision surgery for the following conditions: a. Non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease, such as avascular necrosis, osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis; b. Inflammatory degenerative joint disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis; c. Treatment of non-union, femoral neck fracture and trochantric fractures of the proximal femur with head involvement, unmanageable using other techniques; d. Patients with failed previous surgery where pain, deformity, or dysfunction persists; e. Revision of previously failed hip arthroplasty.

Device Story

Cementless metal-on-polyethylene hip prosthesis system; components include femoral stem (BENCOX ID Stem), modular femoral head (BENCOX Metal Head), and acetabular system (BENCOX Bipolar Cup with shell, PE liner, and locking ring). Used in orthopedic surgery for hip arthroplasty; implanted by surgeons. System provides mechanical articulation for hip joint; self-centering with positive eccentricity. Benefits include restoration of joint function and pain relief in patients with degenerative disease or fractures. Sterilized via gamma irradiation.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data. Substantial equivalence demonstrated via bench testing including ISO 7206-4, ISO 7206-9, ISO 7206-10, ISO 14242-1, ISO 14242-2, ASTM F1147, ASTM F1044, ASTM F1160, ASTM F1978, ASTM F1875, ASTM 2582, and ASTM F1820.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136) stem with plasma spray coating (ASTM F1580-07); CoCrMo alloy (ASTM F1537) head; CoCrMo shell (ASTM F75-07); UHMWPE liner/ring (ASTM F648). Modular design; cementless fixation. Sterilization: Gamma irradiation.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring partial or total hip arthroplasty (primary or revision) due to non-inflammatory/inflammatory degenerative joint disease (e.g., avascular necrosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), non-union, femoral neck/trochanteric fractures, or failed previous hip surgery.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A hip joint femoral (hemi-hip) metal/polymer cemented or uncemented prosthesis is a two-part device intended to be implanted to replace the head and neck of the femur. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and a snap-fit acetabular component made of an alloy, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. This generic type of device may be fixed to the bone with bone cement (§ 888.3027) or implanted by impaction.
