The system is intended for uncemented applications.
Device Story
ArComXL™ Active Articulation Head is a dual-mobility acetabular implant component. It fits over a femoral modular head, creating an articulating surface that then articulates within an acetabular metal shell. Used in primary and total revision hip arthroplasty surgeries. Operated by orthopedic surgeons in a clinical/hospital setting. The device provides an additional articulating surface to improve joint stability and reduce dislocation risk. It is manufactured from highly cross-linked polyethylene (UHMWPE).
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data was provided. Substantial equivalence was determined based on bench testing, including push-in/lever-out mechanical testing and wear testing per ISO 14242 for 5 million cycles, which demonstrated equivalence to predicate devices.
Technological Characteristics
Dual-mobility acetabular implant. Material: Highly cross-linked ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) conforming to ASTM F648. Sizes: 44-66mm (O.D. of mating shell). Application: Uncemented. Design: Articulating head fits over femoral modular head, which then articulates within an acetabular metal shell.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients with noninflammatory degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis, functional deformity, non-union, femoral neck/trochanteric fractures of the proximal femur with head involvement, or revision of failed total hip arthroplasty, and those at risk of dislocation. Single-use implant for uncemented applications.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A hip joint metal/polymer/metal semi-constrained porous-coated uncemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a hip joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across the joint. This generic type of device has a femoral component made of a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy or a titanium-aluminum-vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy and an acetabular component composed of an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene articulating bearing surface fixed in a metal shell made of Co-Cr-Mo or Ti-6Al-4V. The femoral stem and acetabular shell have a porous coating made of, in the case of Co-Cr-Mo substrates, beads of the same alloy, and in the case of Ti-6Al-4V substrates, fibers of commercially pure titanium or Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The porous coating has a volume porosity between 30 and 70 percent, an average pore size between 100 and 1,000 microns, interconnecting porosity, and a porous coating thickness between 500 and 1,500 microns. The generic type of device has a design to achieve biological fixation to bone without the use of bone cement.

Dear Ms. Earl:
We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration. Please note: CDRH does not evaluate information related to contract liability warranties. We remind you, however, that device labeling must be truthful and not misleading.
If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898. In addition, FDA may publish further announcements concerning your device in the Federal Register.
Please be advised that FDA's issuance of a substantial equivalence determination does not mean that FDA has made a determination that your device complies with other requirements of the Act or any Federal statutes and regulations administered by other Federal agencies. You must comply with all the Act's requirements, including, but not limited to: registration and listing (21
