Intended Use

For use with a Toshiba 1.5T EXCELART Vantage or 1.5T Vantage Titan magnetic resonance scanner to produce diagnostic images of the knee that can be interpreted by a trained physician.

Device Story

The Toshiba 1.5T Extra Large Knee Coil is a specialty radiofrequency (RF) coil designed for use with Toshiba 1.5T EXCELART Vantage and 1.5T Vantage Titan MR systems. It functions as an accessory to the MR scanner, receiving RF signals from the knee anatomy during imaging procedures. The device is used in clinical imaging environments by trained medical professionals. The coil facilitates the acquisition of diagnostic-quality MR images of the knee, which are then interpreted by a physician to aid in clinical decision-making and diagnosis of knee pathologies. The device provides a larger form factor to accommodate patients requiring a larger knee coil, potentially improving patient comfort and image quality for this population.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Compliance with IEC 60601-1 (safety) and IEC 60601-2-33 (SAR requirements) was verified. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance was validated using internal manufacturer protocols.

Technological Characteristics

Specialty MR receive coil. Materials: Enclosure materials cleared under K072935 and K093667. Sensing principle: RF signal reception for 1.5T MR systems. Standards: IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-33. Form factor: Extra large knee coil. Connectivity: Dedicated interface for Toshiba 1.5T EXCELART Vantage and Vantage Titan systems.

Indications for Use

Indicated for use with Toshiba 1.5T EXCELART Vantage or 1.5T Vantage Titan MR scanners to produce diagnostic knee images for interpretation by trained physicians.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A magnetic resonance diagnostic device is intended for general diagnostic use to present images which reflect the spatial distribution and/or magnetic resonance spectra which reflect frequency and distribution of nuclei exhibiting nuclear magnetic resonance. Other physical parameters derived from the images and/or spectra may also be produced. The device includes hydrogen-1 (proton) imaging, sodium-23 imaging, hydrogen-1 spectroscopy, phosphorus-31 spectroscopy, and chemical shift imaging (preserving simultaneous frequency and spatial information).

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). A magnetic resonance imaging disposable kit intended for use with a magnetic resonance diagnostic device only is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 892.9.
