The Synthes Spherical Washers are intended to prevent a screw head from breaking through the cortex of the bone by distributing the forces/ load over a large area when used for fracture fixation of large (long) bone and bone fragments. In addition, the Spherical Washers are intended to prevent the projection of the screw head, when the screw must be inserted at an acute angle (e.g., in ankle arthrodesis).
Device Story
Synthes Spherical Washers are orthopedic fixation accessories; round or oval design with slotted center hole; allows screw angulation up to 70 degrees. Used with 4.5 - 7.3 mm diameter screws; manufactured from stainless steel and titanium. Operated by surgeons in clinical/OR settings. Device functions by distributing mechanical load over a larger surface area of bone cortex; prevents screw head breakthrough; minimizes screw head projection during angled insertion. Benefits include improved fixation stability and reduced soft tissue irritation from prominent screw heads.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data; bench testing only.
Technological Characteristics
Materials: Stainless steel and titanium. Design: Round or oval washer with slotted center hole. Function: Accommodates screw angulation up to 70 degrees. Compatibility: 4.5 - 7.3 mm diameter screws. Mechanical fixation accessory.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients requiring fracture fixation of large (long) bone and bone fragments where screw head projection must be minimized or cortical breakthrough prevented, particularly during procedures requiring acute screw angulation such as ankle arthrodesis.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
Single/multiple component metallic bone fixation appliances and accessories are devices intended to be implanted consisting of one or more metallic components and their metallic fasteners. The devices contain a plate, a nail/plate combination, or a blade/plate combination that are made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium, that are intended to be held in position with fasteners, such as screws and nails, or bolts, nuts, and washers. These devices are used for fixation of fractures of the proximal or distal end of long bones, such as intracapsular, intertrochanteric, intercervical, supracondylar, or condylar fractures of the femur; for fusion of a joint; or for surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone. The devices may be implanted or attached through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
