The Surgica Corporation MaxiStat™ PVA Foam Embolization Particles are intended for the following indication: PVA particles may be used for vascular occlusion of blood vessels within the neurovascular systems. They are intended for use in the endovascular management of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and neoplastic lesions when presurgical devascularization is desirable.
Device Story
MaxiStat PVA foam embolization particles are artificial embolization devices used to obstruct or reduce blood flow to hypervascular or neoplastic lesions. Particles are supplied in various size ranges for lesion-specific selection. Delivered via superselective catheter under fluoroscopic guidance; used in endovascular procedures. Physician operates device to achieve vascular occlusion; aids in presurgical devascularization of lesions. Benefits include reduced blood flow to target sites, facilitating surgical intervention.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical data.
Technological Characteristics
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) foam particles; artificial embolization device. Delivered via infusion catheter under fluoroscopic guidance. Sterilized by radiation; nonpyrogenic; single-use.
Indications for Use
Indicated for vascular occlusion of neurovascular blood vessels in patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) or neoplastic lesions requiring presurgical devascularization.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A neurovascular embolization device is an intravascular implant intended to permanently occlude blood flow to cerebral aneurysms and cerebral ateriovenous malformations. This does not include cyanoacrylates and other embolic agents, which act by polymerization or precipitation. Embolization devices used in other vascular applications are also not included in this classification, see § 870.3300.
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls.) The special control for this device is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Vascular and Neurovascular Embolization Devices.” For availability of this guidance document, see § 882.1(e).
