Intended Use

The Somatom Plus 4 with Volume Zoom package is intended to produce cross-sectional images of the body by computer reconstruction of x-ray transmission data from either the same axial plane taken at different angels or spiral planes* taken at different angles. (*spiral planes: the axial planes resulted from the continuous rotation of detectors and x-ray tube, and the simultaneous translation of the patient.)

Device Story

The Somatom Plus 4 with Volume Zoom is a whole-body X-ray CT scanner utilizing a continuously rotating tube-detector system based on the fan beam principle. It captures X-ray transmission data to produce cross-sectional images via computer reconstruction. Operated by clinical staff in a radiology setting, the system uses the SOMARIS/5 software for patient management, scan control, image reconstruction, and archiving. The Volume Zoom package functions as an optional upgrade to existing Somatom Plus 4 systems, enhancing scanning capabilities. Clinicians use the reconstructed images to visualize internal body structures, aiding in diagnostic decision-making and patient assessment.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; substantial equivalence is based on technological characteristics and bench testing/compliance with established safety standards for diagnostic X-ray equipment.

Technological Characteristics

Whole-body X-ray CT scanner; fan beam geometry; continuously rotating tube-detector system. Software: SOMARIS/5. Electrical/Mechanical Safety: IEC 601-1 (+A1:1991, +A2:1995), IEC 60601-1-2. Regulatory compliance: 21 CFR 1020.30, 1020.33.

Indications for Use

Indicated for whole body X-ray computed tomography imaging for patients requiring cross-sectional diagnostic visualization.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A computed tomography x-ray system is a diagnostic x-ray system intended to produce cross-sectional images of the body by computer reconstruction of x-ray transmission data from the same axial plane taken at different angles. This generic type of device may include signal analysis and display equipment, patient and equipment supports, component parts, and accessories.
