Intended Use

The Cervical Standalone Intervertebral Body Fusion Device is indicated for anterior cervical interbody fusion procedures in skeletally mature patients with cervical disc disease at one level from the C2-C3 disc to the C7-T1 disc. Cervical disc disease is defined as neck pain of discogenic origin with degeneration of the disc confirmed by history and radiographic studies. The Cervical Standalone Intervertebral Body Fusion Device implants are to be used with autogenous bone graft and implanted via an anterior approach. The cervical device is to be used in patients who have had six weeks of non-operative treatment. The Cervical Standalone Intervertebral Body Fusion Device is to be used with two titanium alloy screws which accompany the implant.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Mechanical testing included static compression, static compression shear, static torsion, static load-induced subsidence, static expulsion, dynamic compression, dynamic compression shear, and dynamic torsion per ASTM F-2077 and ASTM F-2267. Wear testing performed to characterize particulate debris. Results demonstrate performance meeting or exceeding specifications and substantial equivalence to predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: PEEK-OPTIMA LT (ASTM F-2026), Tantalum (ASTM F-560), Titanium 6AI-4V ELI (ASTM F-136). Design: Intervertebral cage with toothed spikes and anterior titanium faceplate for screw fixation. Mechanical testing per ASTM F-2077 and ASTM F-2267. Standalone fusion device.

Indications for Use

Indicated for anterior cervical interbody fusion in skeletally mature patients with cervical disc disease (neck pain of discogenic origin with confirmed degeneration) at one level (C2-C3 to C7-T1) after six weeks of failed non-operative treatment.

An intervertebral body fusion device is an implanted single or multiple component spinal device made from a variety of materials, including titanium and polymers. The device is inserted into the intervertebral body space of the cervical or lumbosacral spine, and is intended for intervertebral body fusion.

Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls) for intervertebral body fusion devices that contain bone grafting material. The special control is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Intervertebral Body Fusion Device.” See § 888.1(e) for the availability of this guidance document.(2) Class III (premarket approval) for intervertebral body fusion devices that include any therapeutic biologic (e.g., bone morphogenic protein). Intervertebral body fusion devices that contain any therapeutic biologic require premarket approval. (c) *Date premarket approval application (PMA) or notice of product development protocol (PDP) is required.* Devices described in paragraph (b)(2) of this section shall have an approved PMA or a declared completed PDP in effect before being placed in commercial distribution.

These technological characteristics include the same indications for use, design concepts, feature comparisons, and known biocompatible materials. Summary of test data: Mechanical testing of the subject device consisted of static compression, static compression shear, static torsion, static load induced subsidence, static expulsion, dynamic compression, dynamic compression shear and dynamic torsion.
