Intended Use

The Vail ALIF Buttress Plate System in conjunction with traditional rigid fixation is intended for use in spinal fusion procedures of the thoracolumbar to S1 spinal region as a means to maintain the relative position of weak bony tissue such as allografts or autografts. This device is not intended for load bearing applications.

Device Story

Vail ALIF Buttress Plate System is an anterior, non-load bearing spinal fixation device. Used in thoracolumbar to S1 spinal fusion procedures to maintain position of bone grafts (allografts/autografts). Device features angled flanged shape with spike fixation and single screw. Surgeon engages a visible lock to provide positive visual feedback during fixation. Used in surgical settings by physicians. Benefits include stabilization of graft material during fusion. Provided non-sterile; requires user sterilization.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance data included static and dynamic cantilever bending tests. Results met all specified criteria, demonstrating safety and effectiveness profile equivalent to predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Titanium Alloy 6AL-4V ELI (ASTM F136). Design: Angled flanged plate with spike features and single screw fixation. Includes visible lock mechanism. Supplied non-sterile; intended for moist heat sterilization by user. Single use.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients undergoing spinal fusion procedures in the thoracolumbar to S1 spinal region requiring maintenance of the relative position of weak bony tissue (allografts or autografts). Not for load-bearing applications.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A spinal intervertebral body fixation orthosis is a device intended to be implanted made of titanium. It consists of various vertebral plates that are punched into each of a series of vertebral bodies. An eye-type screw is inserted in a hole in the center of each of the plates. A braided cable is threaded through each eye-type screw. The cable is tightened with a tension device and it is fastened or crimped at each eye-type screw. The device is used to apply force to a series of vertebrae to correct “sway back,” scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine), or other conditions.
