Intended Use

The KMI K3 Bone Screw System™ will be used on indications that are common with presently marketed devices. The indications for use of the K3 Bone Screw System™ are fixation/stabilization of small bones in hand or small bones in mid and forefoot fractures.

Device Story

K3 Bone Screw System consists of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) bone screws used for fracture fixation and stabilization. Available in 3.5 mm diameter (cannulated and solid) with various lengths. Implanted by orthopedic surgeons using standard manual hexhead screwdrivers and general orthopedic instrumentation. Device provides mechanical fixation to stabilize bone fragments during healing. Clinical benefit derived from established orthopedic principles for bone fracture management, supported by over 75 years of clinical history for similar screw designs.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided. Substantial equivalence is based on the long-term clinical history (75+ years) of bone screw designs, established manufacturing methods, and adherence to voluntary ASTM material and design standards.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Ti-6Al-4V ELI titanium alloy (ASTM F136-84). Instrumentation: Stainless steel (ASTM F899-84). Design: Threaded bone fixation fastener, 3.5 mm diameter, cannulated and solid configurations. Sterilization: Supplied non-sterile; requires user sterilization. No electronic or software components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for fixation and stabilization of small bone fractures in the hand, midfoot, and forefoot.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
