Device Story

Bone fixation system comprising Snap Off Screws, Double Thread Compression Screws, Guide Wires, and Staples. Used in orthopedic surgery (foot/hand/ankle) by physicians. Screws and staples provide mechanical fixation of bone fragments or reconstruction; guide wires assist in implant positioning. Snap Off technology allows distal end of staple to serve as drilling gauge/grip, then snapped off after placement. Manual insertion for screws; machine insertion for guide wires. Devices provide stable fixation to facilitate bone healing.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing included torque tests, break-off tests, sideways stability tests, maximum torque tests, screw-in tests, screw compression tests, and ASTM F564-10 testing for staples.

Technological Characteristics

Materials: ASTM F136 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) for screws/staples; ASTM F138 (1.4441) for guide wires. Dimensions: Screws (10-36mm length, 2-4mm diameter); Guide wires (80-380mm length, 0.7-6.35mm diameter); Staples (8-25mm size). Features: Cannulated screws, SnapOff technology for staples, trocar end styles for wires. Manual or machine insertion.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring bone fracture fixation, bone reconstruction, or soft tissue/tendon fixation in the foot, hand, or ankle. Includes use for arthrodesis, osteotomies, and small bone fragment stabilization. No specific age or gender contraindications stated.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
