Intended Use

The EXPANSE Vertebral Body Replacement (VBR) Device is indicated for use in the thoracolumbar spine (T3 - L5) to replace a collapsed, damaged or unstable vertebral body which has been resected or excised (i.e., partial or total vertebrectomy) due to tumor or trauma (i.e., fracture). The EXPANSE VBR Device is designed to restore the biomechanical integrity of the anterior, middle, and posterior spinal column even in the absence of fusion for a prolonged period. The EXPANSE VBR Device is intended to be used with bone graft and supplemental fixation. The supplemental internal fixation systems that may be used with the EXPANSE VBR Device include the Zodiac Polyaxial Pedicle Screw System, the Expedium Spinal System, the Expedium Anterior system, and the CD Horizon Spinal System, or equivalent systems. The EXPANSE VBR Device may be implanted singularly or in pairs.

Device Story

EXPANSE VBR is an expandable spinal implant; replaces resected/excised vertebral bodies in thoracolumbar spine (T3-L5). Device consists of two opposing surfaces with roughened contact areas to engage bony endplates; prevents rotation/migration. Surgeon expands device 2mm in height; inserts shim to lock mechanical integrity. Implanted singularly or in pairs; used with bone graft and supplemental internal fixation (e.g., pedicle screw systems). Restores biomechanical integrity of anterior, middle, and posterior spinal columns. Used by surgeons in clinical settings.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data. Safety and equivalency supported by biocompatibility assessment and bench testing.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Titanium 6Al-4V alloy (ASTM F-136). Design: Expandable vertebral body replacement device with shim-based locking mechanism. Surfaces: Roughened for endplate engagement. Dimensions: Five heights, single length. Energy source: None (mechanical). Connectivity: None.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring replacement of a collapsed, damaged, or unstable vertebral body in the thoracolumbar spine (T3-L5) following partial or total vertebrectomy due to tumor or trauma (fracture).

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A spinal intervertebral body fixation orthosis is a device intended to be implanted made of titanium. It consists of various vertebral plates that are punched into each of a series of vertebral bodies. An eye-type screw is inserted in a hole in the center of each of the plates. A braided cable is threaded through each eye-type screw. The cable is tightened with a tension device and it is fastened or crimped at each eye-type screw. The device is used to apply force to a series of vertebrae to correct “sway back,” scoliosis (lateral curvature of the spine), or other conditions.
