Intended Use

The Search Evolution (LC) Total Knee System is intended to replace a knee joint in order to relieve pain and restore knee function, for indications such as, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, traumatic arthritis, varus, valgus or flexion deformities and revision surgery. The Search Evolution non-porous titanium plasma spray coated femoral components are designed for use with bone cement.

Device Story

The Search Evolution (LC) Total Knee System is a cemented, semiconstrained knee prosthesis. The femoral component is manufactured from CoCrMo and features a titanium plasma spray coating applied via plasma spray technique. The device is intended for surgical implantation by an orthopedic surgeon to replace a damaged knee joint, aiming to relieve pain and restore function. It is used in clinical settings during total knee arthroplasty or revision procedures. The titanium coating is designed to interface with bone cement to secure the implant.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing was conducted in accordance with FDA guidance for orthopedic implants with modified metallic surfaces and metallic plasma sprayed coatings. No clinical data was provided.

Technological Characteristics

Femoral component manufactured from CoCrMo (ISO 5832 compliant) with a titanium plasma spray coating. Semiconstrained, cemented prosthesis. Designed for use with bone cement.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring knee joint replacement due to osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, traumatic arthritis, varus, valgus or flexion deformities, or revision surgery.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A knee joint patellofemorotibial polymer/metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a knee joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and a tibial component or components and a retropatellar resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. This generic type of device is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).
