## Intended Use

The Mediscope Asymmetrical Compression Staple is intended to be used for fixation such as: osteotomies in the forefoot, first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis, Akin osteotomy, midfoot and hindfoot arthrodeses or osteotomies, fixation of osteotomies for hallux valgus treatment (Scarf and Chevron), and arthrodesis of the metatarsocuneiform joint to reposition and stabilize metatarsus primus varus.

## Device Story

Mediscope Asymmetrical Compression Staple is a single-patient-use metallic bone fixation device. Manufactured from nickel-free stainless steel; features barbs to prevent back-out; available in 5 sizes. Used by orthopedic surgeons in clinical settings to cross fusion sites of two bones. Operates by providing mechanical compression across osteotomy or arthrodesis sites to stabilize bone segments during healing. Output is physical fixation of bone. Benefits patient by maintaining alignment and promoting fusion in foot/ankle procedures.

## Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Testing performed per ASTM F564-02 (Standard Specification and Test Methods for Metallic Bone Staples) comparing subject device to predicate. Tests included elastic static bending, constant amplitude bending fatigue, and pull-out fixation strength. Biocompatibility testing conducted per ISO 10993-1.

## Technological Characteristics

Material: Nickel-free stainless steel. Design: Asymmetrical staple with barbs. Dimensions: 5 sizes. Testing standards: ASTM F564-02 (mechanical testing), ISO 10993-1 (biocompatibility).

## Regulatory Identification

Single/multiple component metallic bone fixation appliances and accessories are devices intended to be implanted consisting of one or more metallic components and their metallic fasteners. The devices contain a plate, a nail/plate combination, or a blade/plate combination that are made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium, that are intended to be held in position with fasteners, such as screws and nails, or bolts, nuts, and washers. These devices are used for fixation of fractures of the proximal or distal end of long bones, such as intracapsular, intertrochanteric, intercervical, supracondylar, or condylar fractures of the femur; for fusion of a joint; or for surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone. The devices may be implanted or attached through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
