Indications for Use

The Trident® Screw Hole Plugs are optional single-use devices that are intended to occlude the unused screw holes of the Trident® Porous Titanium Acetabular Component or the Trident® Porous Titanium Acetabular Component with Peri-Apatite™ Coating. The Trident® Screw Hole Plugs will be used either with or without bone cement depending upon the appropriate surgical application of the Trident® shell. The Trident® Bone Spikes are optional single-use devices that are intended to provide supplemental fixation of the Trident® Porous Titanium Acetabular Shell or the Trident® Porous Titanium Acetabular Shell with Peri-Apatite™ Coating in the prepared acetabulum in total hip arthroplasty. These Trident® Bone Spikes are intended to be used when the above-referenced Trident® acetabular shells are used in a press fit application.

Device Story

Trident® Screw Hole Plugs and Bone Spikes are single-use orthopedic accessories for Trident® acetabular shells. Plugs are threaded CP titanium components inserted into unused screw holes to prevent bone cement intrusion or fibrous tissue ingrowth and debris migration. Bone Spikes are titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) components with a threaded base and superior spike; they provide supplemental fixation in press-fit applications by anchoring into the prepared acetabular bone. Both devices are installed intraoperatively by a surgeon using a TORX® screwdriver. Plugs are inserted from the shell interior; Bone Spikes are pre-assembled to the shell before placement into the acetabulum. These devices assist in stabilizing the acetabular component, potentially improving long-term fixation and reducing complications associated with open screw holes or inadequate shell seating.

Technological Characteristics

Trident® Screw Hole Plugs: Commercially pure (CP) titanium, threaded, TORX® recess. Trident® Bone Spikes: Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V), 7mm and 9mm lengths, threaded base, TORX® recess. Both are single-use, non-sterile (implied), mechanical fixation components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients undergoing cemented or cementless total hip arthroplasty requiring occlusion of unused acetabular screw holes or supplemental fixation of the acetabular shell. Contraindicated in obese patients due to risk of device or fixation failure from excessive loading.

A hip joint metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace a hip joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces. It has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a femoral component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and an acetabular resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).
