Device Story
Arthrex Compression FT Pins are solid, fully threaded, self-tapping bone fixation fasteners with tapering heads and optional snap-off function. Used by orthopedic surgeons in clinical settings for fixation of fractures, osteotomies, and arthrodesis. Pins are available in 1.9 mm and 2.4 mm diameters and 10-50 mm lengths. Device provides mechanical stabilization of bone fragments to facilitate healing. Surgeon inserts pin into bone; snap-off feature allows removal of excess length post-fixation. Benefits include secure fragment compression and fixation. Device is single-use, provided sterile or non-sterile.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. Mechanical testing performed per ASTM F543-17 (axial pull-out, compression, failure torque, insertion torque, snapping, shear). Biocompatibility testing conducted per ISO 10993-1:2018 (cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation, genotoxicity, systemic toxicity, subchronic/subacute toxicity, implantation). MRI safety testing performed per ASTM F2052, F2119, F2182, and F2213. Bacterial endotoxin testing performed per ANSI/AAMI ST72:2019 and USP standards.
Technological Characteristics
Materials: Titanium Alloy (ASTM F136). Design: Solid, fully threaded, self-tapping, tapering head, snap-off feature. Dimensions: 1.9 mm and 2.4 mm diameters; 10-50 mm lengths. Sterilization: Sterile and non-sterile options. Single-use. No software or energy source.
Indications for Use
Indicated for small bone fracture and osteotomy fixation (1.9 mm) and fixation of small bone, osteochondral, and cancellous fragments (2.4 mm) in hand, wrist, foot, ankle, and knee; includes specific applications like intra-articular fractures, osteochondritis dissecans, and reconstructive foot surgery.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
