## Intended Use

The Synthes 4.5 mm and 6.5 mm Headless Compression Screws are indicated for fracture fixation, reconstruction, osteotomy, and arthrodesis of various bones and bone fragments including joint fusions (arthrodeses) in the foot and fixation of intra-articular fractures of the humerus, femur and tibia.

## Device Story

Synthes 4.5 mm and 6.5 mm Headless Compression Screws are metallic bone fixation fasteners. Devices are cannulated, self-drilling, and self-tapping; feature StarDrive recess; include threaded head for countersinking into bone. Used by surgeons for fracture fixation, reconstruction, osteotomy, and arthrodesis. Screws provide mechanical stabilization of bone fragments to facilitate healing.

## Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; substantial equivalence supported by bench testing and design comparison.

## Technological Characteristics

Materials: stainless steel and titanium alloy. Design: cannulated, self-drilling, self-tapping, StarDrive recess, threaded head for countersinking. Classification: Class II, 21 CFR 888.3040.

## Regulatory Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
