Intended Use

The Agility™ LP Total Ankle Prosthesis components, as part of the DePuy Agility™ Total Ankle system, are intended for use in patients with end stage ankle disorders as an alternative to ankle fusions. Total ankle arthroplasty is intended to give a patient limited mobility by reducing pain, restoring alignment and replacing the flexion and extension movement in the ankle joint. Total ankle arthroplasty is indicated for patients with ankle joints damaged by severe rheumatoid, post traumatic or degenerative arthritis in elderly individuals with reduced activity levels. CAUTION: The Agility Ankle Prosthesis is intended for cemented use only.

Device Story

Modular ankle prosthesis; consists of tibial tray, polyethylene tibial insert, and talar component. Designed as line extension to Agility Total Ankle system. Used by orthopedic surgeons in clinical settings to replace ankle joint flexion/extension movement, reduce pain, and restore alignment in patients with end-stage arthritis. Device requires surgical implantation; cemented fixation only. Provides mechanical joint replacement to improve patient mobility.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; bench testing only.

Technological Characteristics

Modular metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented ankle prosthesis. Components include tibial tray, polyethylene tibial insert, and talar component. Class II device per 21 CFR 888.3110.

Indications for Use

Indicated for elderly patients with reduced activity levels suffering from end-stage ankle disorders, including severe rheumatoid, post-traumatic, or degenerative arthritis, as an alternative to ankle fusion. Intended for cemented use only.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

An ankle joint metal/polymer semi-constrained cemented prosthesis is a device intended to be implanted to replace an ankle joint. The device limits translation and rotation in one or more planes via the geometry of its articulating surfaces and has no linkage across-the-joint. This generic type of device includes prostheses that have a talar resurfacing component made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, and a tibial resurfacing component made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and is limited to those prostheses intended for use with bone cement (§ 888.3027).
