## Intended Use

The Synthes Sternal Fixation System is intended for use in primary or secondary closure/repair of the sternum following sternotomy or fracture of the sternum to stabilize the sternum and promote fusion. The Synthes (USA) Titanium 2.4 mm Universal Locking Plates (12, 13 and 20 hole) are indicated for use in primary or secondary closure/repair of the sternum following sternotomy or fracture of the sternum to stabilize the sternum and promote fusion.

## Device Story

System consists of machined titanium plates, quick-release pins, and 3.0 mm locking screws; used for sternal stabilization and fusion promotion following sternotomy or fracture. Device provides mechanical fixation to stabilize sternal segments. Operated by surgeons in clinical settings. Output is a rigid construct created by screw fixation of plates to bone. Benefits include sternal stability and enhanced healing. This submission specifically covers a modification to the surgical technique for the existing system.

## Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; substantial equivalence is based on design and technological characteristics.

## Technological Characteristics

Machined titanium plates, quick-release pins, and 3.0 mm locking screws. Mechanical fixation system. No software or electronic components.

## Regulatory Identification

Single/multiple component metallic bone fixation appliances and accessories are devices intended to be implanted consisting of one or more metallic components and their metallic fasteners. The devices contain a plate, a nail/plate combination, or a blade/plate combination that are made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium, that are intended to be held in position with fasteners, such as screws and nails, or bolts, nuts, and washers. These devices are used for fixation of fractures of the proximal or distal end of long bones, such as intracapsular, intertrochanteric, intercervical, supracondylar, or condylar fractures of the femur; for fusion of a joint; or for surgical procedures that involve cutting a bone. The devices may be implanted or attached through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
