## Indications for Use

The BACTEC® MGIT™ 960 System is an in vitro diagnostic instrument designed and optimized for the rapid detection of mycobacterial in clinical specimens (except blood and urine). Samples are collected from patients, processed and inoculated into BBL® MGIT™ 7mL tubes supplemented with BBL® MGIT™ and BBL® MGIT™ OADC.

## Device Story

The BACTEC® MGIT™ 960 is an automated, self-contained incubation and detection instrument for mycobacteria. It features three drawers, each holding up to 320 tubes containing 7H9 growth medium and a fluorescent oxygen-sensitive indicator. Clinical specimens are processed, inoculated into tubes, and loaded into the instrument. The system continuously monitors tubes every 60 minutes by measuring fluorescence levels; mycobacterial metabolism consumes oxygen, causing the indicator to fluoresce. Positive tubes are flagged on the drawer front for confirmation via acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear and subculture; negative tubes are discarded. The device is used in clinical laboratory settings by trained personnel to provide rapid detection of mycobacterial growth, facilitating faster clinical decision-making and patient management compared to conventional methods.

## Clinical Evidence

External evaluation conducted at six sites with 3,330 specimens. 362 isolates were recovered. The BACTEC® MGIT™ 960 recovered 289 (80%) isolates compared to 271 (75%) by the BACTEC® 460 TB System. The false positive rate for the MGIT 960 was 8.6% (27/313 instrument-positive tubes), and the false negative rate was 0.9%.

## Technological Characteristics

Instrumented incubation/detection system. Growth medium: 7H9 Middlebrook broth base with OADC enrichment and PANTA antibiotic supplement. Detection principle: O2-sensitive fluorescent sensor in silicone rubber base. Incubation temperature: 37±1.5°C. Capacity: 960 tubes. Connectivity: Standalone instrument.

## Regulatory Identification

A microbial growth monitor is a device intended for medical purposes that measures the concentration of bacteria suspended in a liquid medium by measuring changes in light scattering properties, optical density, electrical impedance, or by making direct bacterial counts. The device aids in the diagnosis of disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms.
