Intended Use

Device Story

System measures glucose in fresh capillary whole blood via electrochemical biosensor technology. User applies blood sample to disposable test strip; meter detects current generated by enzymatic reaction (Glucose Dehydrogenase/NAD). Meter displays plasma-equivalent glucose concentration (mg/dL) after 10 seconds. Designed for single-patient home use; includes meter, test strips, and control solutions. Clinical Evidence

User performance study with 152 diabetic hospital outpatients. Compared palm capillary blood glucose results to YSI reference method. Results for glucose > 75 mg/dL showed 98% within ± 20% of reference. Study confirmed performance during steady-state conditions.

Test Principle: The test is based on the enzymatic conversion of glucose. Glucose dehydrogenase converts glucose in the sample to gluconolactone, with concomitant reduction of the enzyme cofactor NAD+ to NADH. Other Supportive Instrument Performance Characteristics Data Not Covered In The “Performance Characteristics” Section above: A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of altitude up to 10,000 feet on performance of the test system. Venous whole blood samples at three glucose concentrations (approximately 60, 120 and 350 mg/dL) were tested at sea level and 10,000 feet using a hypobaric chamber, with one lot of test strips and one meter. Each sample was also evaluated by the YSI method. At altitudes up to 10,000 feet, test results supported the claimed altitude. The meter and lancing device are intended for single-patient use only. Dispatch Hospital Cleaner with Bleach Wipes with EPA registration # 56392-8 were validated for use with the meter and lancing device. Laboratory studies demonstrated that levels of virus were below the detection limit of the assay after disinfection. The sponsor also demonstrated that there was no change in performance or in the external materials of the meter and lancing device after 375 cleaning and disinfection cycles designed to simulate 5 years of device use. Labeling was reviewed for adequate instructions for the validated cleaning and disinfection procedures. {6} Q.
