Intended Use

POLYPROPYLENE is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures.

Device Story

POLYPROPYLENE is a sterile, nonabsorbable surgical monofilament suture made from long-chain polyolefin polymer (polypropylene). It is used by surgeons for soft tissue approximation and ligation in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures. The suture is provided as a monofilament thread, either undyed or dyed with FDA-listed color additives (D&C Blue No. 6 or [Phthalocyaninato(2-)] copper), and may be supplied with or without attached surgical needles. The device is intended for single use. It functions by providing mechanical tissue support; it does not undergo significant changes in tensile strength in vivo. The device is sterilized via gamma irradiation.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data. Substantial equivalence is supported by non-clinical bench testing demonstrating conformance to U.S.P. standards for nonabsorbable surgical sutures, including physical properties, tensile strength, and needle attachment strength.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Long-chain polyolefin polymer (polypropylene). Form: Monofilament thread. Sterilization: Gamma irradiation. Standards: U.S.P. monograph for Nonabsorbable Surgical Suture, ISO 9002, EN 46002, EN 552. Packaging: Aluminum foil and polyester. Connectivity: None (mechanical device).

Indications for Use

Indicated for general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures. Prescription use only.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Nonabsorbable polypropylene surgical suture is a monofilament, nonabsorbable, sterile, flexible thread prepared from long-chain polyolefin polymer known as polypropylene and is indicated for use in soft tissue approximation. The polypropylene surgical suture meets United States Pharmacopeia (U.S.P.) requirements as described in the U.S.P. Monograph for Nonabsorbable Surgical Sutures; it may be undyed or dyed with an FDA approved color additive; and the suture may be provided with or without a standard needle attached.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is FDA's “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Surgical Sutures; Guidance for Industry and FDA.” See § 878.1(e) for the availability of this guidance document.
