Indications for Use
Belzer UW Cold Storage Solution, hereafter known as BELZER UW-CSS, can be used for cold storage of the liver, pancreas, and kidney. BELZER UW-CSS has the potential to be used as a general solution for most organs, both for initial cooling during in situ donor organ flushing and for subsequent cold storage.
Device Story
BELZER UW-CSS is a chemical preservation solution used for cold storage of donor organs (liver, pancreas, kidney). It functions by maintaining organ viability during transport between donor harvest and recipient transplantation. The solution is used by transplant surgeons and clinical staff during the organ procurement process. It is applied via in situ donor organ flushing and subsequent ex-vivo cold storage. By extending the safe preservation time compared to traditional solutions like EuroCollins, it allows for longer transport windows, potentially transforming transplant procedures from emergency to semi-elective. The solution must be flushed from the organ's vascular space before implantation to avoid systemic potassium overload in the recipient.
Clinical Evidence
Clinical studies compared BELZER UW-CSS to EuroCollins' solution (ECS). Liver study: 126 ECS (retrospective) vs 122 BELZER UW-CSS (prospective). BELZER UW-CSS extended mean preservation time by 88% (10.39 vs 5.53 hours, p<0.01). Lower post-op SGOT/SGPT levels and reduced retransplantation rates observed with BELZER UW-CSS. Pancreas study: 6 ECS vs 9 BELZER UW-CSS. BELZER UW-CSS showed significantly longer mean preservation time (8.7 vs 3.7 hours). No significant differences in post-transplant amylase or glucose levels. Preclinical dog kidney study: 100% survival at 48-72 hours with BELZER UW-CSS vs 0% survival at 72 hours with ECS.
Technological Characteristics
Chemical organ preservation solution. High potassium concentration formulation. Designed for hypothermic storage of donor organs. No electronic, software, or mechanical components.
Indications for Use
Indicated for cold storage and preservation of donor liver, pancreas, and kidney organs prior to transplantation. No specific patient population contraindications; solution must be flushed from the vascular space of the organ prior to transplantation to prevent systemic potassium overload.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
An isolated kidney perfusion and transport system and accessories is a device that is used to support a donated or a cadaver kidney and to maintain the organ in a near-normal physiologic state until it is transplanted into a recipient patient. This generic type of device may include tubing, catheters, connectors, an ice storage or freezing container with or without bag or preservatives, pulsatile or nonpulsatile hypothermic isolated organ perfusion apparatus with or without oxygenator, and disposable perfusion set.
