## Clinical Evidence

No clinical tests were conducted. Evidence consists of bench-top design verification and validation, including tensile strength, leakage, kinking, flow rate, suction, electrical functionality, and animal testing. Biocompatibility, packaging, and sterilization validated per ISO 10993-1, ISO 11607, and ISO 11137 standards.

## Regulatory Identification

A gastrointestinal tube and accessories is a device that consists of flexible or semi-rigid tubing used for instilling fluids into, withdrawing fluids from, splinting, or suppressing bleeding of the alimentary tract. This device may incorporate an integral inflatable balloon for retention or hemostasis. This generic type of device includes the hemostatic bag, irrigation and aspiration catheter (gastric, colonic, etc.), rectal catheter, sterile infant gavage set, gastrointestinal string and tubes to locate internal bleeding, double lumen tube for intestinal decompression or intubation, feeding tube, gastroenterostomy tube, Levine tube, nasogastric tube, single lumen tube with mercury weight balloon for intestinal intubation or decompression, and gastro-urological irrigation tray (for gastrological use).

## Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls). The barium enema retention catheter and tip with or without a bag that is a gastrointestinal tube and accessory or a gastronomy tube holder accessory is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 876.9.(2) Class I (general controls) for the dissolvable nasogastric feed tube guide for the nasogastric tube. The class I device is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 876.9.

We have reviewed your section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. Although this letter refers to your product as a device, please be aware that some cleared products may instead be combination products. |  The Edi Catheter ENFit is a nasogastric feeding tube with an array of electrodes that record diaphragm electrical activity (Edi). The Edi Catheter ENFit is an accessory to be used with Servo ventilator systems that have neurally controlled ventilation modes available. The Edi signal is used as an additional detector to improve the synchrony between the patient and the ventilator and to give the patient corresponding ventilatory support. To function as a naso-gastric tube for feeding and medications and to aspirate from the gastric ventricle. The Edi Catheter ENFit is available in different sizes depending on the patient population. The Edi Catheter ENFit is for single-use only and may be used for up to five days. The catheter is sterilized by the use of gamma radiation and has a validated shelf-life of two years.  |   |

Testing was performed to demonstrate that the incorporated modifications do not affect the device's ability to perform as intended. Specifically, the objective of the testing was to confirm that the modifications do not compromise safety and performance.

The design verification activities consisted of:

- Product verification
- Tensile Strength
- Liquid Leakage
- Forces Tip to Tissue and Insertion/Withdrawal Force
- Horizontal Kinking
- Flow Rate
- Suction
- Resistance/Capacitance and Electrical Functionality
- Animal testing

ENFit Connector verification in accordance with ISO 80369-3, Small-bore connectors for liquids and gases in healthcare applications - Part 3: Connectors for enteral applications, using the test methods provided in ISO 80369-20, Small-bore connectors for liquids and gases in healthcare applications - Part 20: Common test methods.

Biocompatibility testing was conducted in accordance with ISO 10993-1, "Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices - Part 1: Evaluation and Testing within a Risk Management Process" and applicable sub-standards.

Packaging validation was conducted in accordance with ISO 11607-1, "Packaging for terminally sterilized medical devices - Part 1: Requirements for materials, sterile barrier systems and packaging systems" and ISO 11607-2, "Packaging for terminally sterilized medical devices - Part 2: Validation requirements for forming, sealing and assembly processes".

Sterilization validation was conducted in accordance with ISO 11137-1, "Sterilization of health care products - Radiation - Part 1: Requirements for development, validation and routine control of a sterilization process for medical devices" and applicable sub-standards.

Transport and storage testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM D4169, "Standard Practice for Performance Testing of Shipping Containers and System".

No clinical tests were conducted and submitted in this 510(k) submission.

The results of the verification/validation testing demonstrate that the Edi Catheter ENFit meets the established performance requirements for the device and that the proposed device is as safe and effective as the predicate device (K153688).
