Intended Use

Device Story

Over-the-needle peripheral IV catheter; includes radiopaque polyurethane catheter, needle, grip, passive safety needle shield, and flash chamber. Features BD Instaflash™ technology for immediate blood visualization upon vessel entry. Optional BD Multiguard™ technology prevents blood flow from hub until Luer connection. Used by clinicians in clinical settings for blood sampling, blood pressure monitoring, and fluid administration. Passive safety mechanism protects needle tip upon removal to prevent needlestick injuries. Output is vascular access; healthcare providers use device to facilitate therapy or diagnostics. Benefits include reduced needlestick risk and improved visualization of vessel entry.

A risk analysis was conducted in accordance with ISO 14971:2019 Medical Devices – Application of Risk Management to Medical Devices to determine the impact of the changes on device performance and safety. When technological characteristics between the subject and predicate devices were found to be identical, results of performance testing conducted on the predicate device were applied to the subject device.
